Fingering Case Study: Joy to the World

Joy to the World contains several finger manuevers that will be used time and time again throughout your songs.   Knowing these maneuvers and when to use them will invaluable to you when you need to place fingering, or when you need a more comfortable option.

Start by downloading a clean copy the sheet music so you can place the fingering as we go.

Here are the maneuvers taught in this song:

Maneuver Used:  "Cross thumb with 3rd finger".  This is the most common basic movement which creates more fingers to use when you run out of fingers.

Maneuver Used:  "Reaching with your #2 finger" is proper and common when there is a big leap, and when you need more fingers after the leap.

Maneuver used:  "Reaching with 5th finger" is a common maneuver when there is a big leap, and you don't need more fingers after the leap.

Maneuver used:  "Cross thumb with 3rd finger" is commonly used when more fingers are needed for upcoming notes.

Maneuver used:  "Reaching with 5th finger" with your thumb anchored in place is a natural and common movement for huge leaps.

Maneuver used:  "Cross thumb with 3rd finger" as you can see, is commonly used when more fingers are needed for upcoming notes.

Goal:  Use as many fingers as possible before using a finger maneuver.

Goal:  Stay in same position as much as you can, using as few maneuvers and changes as possible!

Note:  At times you can't prevent running out of fingers, so crossing over your thumb is always a handy option!

Reminder:  Stay in same position as much as you can with goal of as little changes as possible throughout the song.
