Fingering Case Study #3: Silent Night
Download the sheet music so you can follow along and write in the fingering.
Previously taught maneuvers will be seen in this song, with the following new maneuvers:
1. Maneuver: A total hand position change. Lifting your entire hand and placing it in another position without a smooth finger transition can happen when you are at the end of a phrase (lyrical phrase) or where there can be a natural break.
2. Maneuver: Hand position change that pivots on the thumb. When you need to total hand position but it's not in a place where you can avoid an interuption in the music, you can pivot on your thumb.
Important Notes from this video:
1. Always look ahead so you can choose the best starting fingering. (The concept of "looking ahead" is used as you continue to choose fingering throughout a song.)
2. Reaching with the 5th finger comes in handy pretty often! (However, don't use this if you need more fingers to go higher after the reach.)
3. Reaching with a different finger as shown as an example is what you do when reaching with 5 doesn't work.
4. Always use the fingers that are already in place, striving for as little finger changes as possible.
5. At times, there are more than 1 choice of fingering possibilities. Though these possitiblities are your choice, use the one that is most comfortable and make the most sense in the song.
